In a letter to shareholders last year, Grubhub stated, "For restaurant inventory, we will rapidly expand our recent pilots of putting non-partnered restaurants on the platform. The strategy appears to be to ask for forgiveness after the fact instead of getting permission. Grubhub has admitted in the past that it added restaurants to its app and website without an agreement but mentioned it would remove any business that complained. Grubhub has also been accused of making restaurants pay for phone calls that were not orders and purchasing restaurant website domains without notifying them. The customers frequently blame the restaurants for the problems without realizing they never asked to be part of Grubhub or Postmates or DoorDash. The results often lead to confused kitchens, long wait times and angry customers who may or may not get what they ordered. In some cases, the companies will send drivers to place an order and pick it up without the restaurants figuring out they are part of an online delivery service.
